GIS5100 - Module 3 - Visibility Analysis
In this module 3, we do things a little differently by learning through ESRI courses instead of manually doing our UWF labs through Citrix. These are the 4 courses that were assigned for us.
- Introduction to 3D Visualization
- Performing Line of Sight Analysis
- Performing Viewshed Analysis in ArcGIS Pro
- Sharing 3D Content Using Scene Layer Packages
Here are two things I learned from each course:
A. Introduction to 3D Visualization:
- 3D Visualization help users to to identify patterns not apparent in 2D, invite imagination and understanding, and allow users to see stacked content.
- Vertical exaggeration is a property used to emphasize subtle changes in a surface while a cartographic offset vertically adjusts the height value of the entire layer, raising or lowering all features in the layer by a given height.
B. Performing Line of Sight Analysis:
- A line of sight calculates intervisibility between the first vertex—the observer—and the last vertex—the target—along a straight line between the two.
- To perform a visibility analysis, first determine the target and observer, then construct 3D sight lines between the observer and the target, and then finally determine the visibility between the observer and the target along each of the sight lines.
C. Performing Viewshed Analysis in ArcGIS Pro.
- The Viewshed tool creates an output that models the areas that are visible from given vantage points.
- The Viewshed tool works on points and polylines to model visibility.
D. Sharing 3D Content Using Scene Layer Packages
- When authoring 3D scenes, these tips are essentials:
- Have all your source data and the scene in the same coordinate system.
- Structure your content and decide what the user must see.
- Define an area of interest (AOI) for your scene.
- 3D symbology is required for feature layers to be published and shared.
- These are the requirement for sharing scene content.
- ArcGIS Pro software
- An organizational role with sharing privileges
- Permissions to share with users who will access content
